Regulations Prohibit Terms 'Anti Wrinkle Injections' & 'Dermal Fillers'

On 7 March 2024, the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), Australia’s government authority responsible for assessing, monitoring, and regulating medicines and medical devices, reinforced its regulations on the advertising of cosmetic injectables.

TGA reminded doctors that Anti Wrinkle Injections, Dermal Fillers, and Fat Dissolving Injections are Schedule 4 prescription medicines and therefore, are not permitted in the advertising of cosmetic health services. Also prohibited are before/after photographs and prices of such treatments. The TGA has the power to prosecute and fine clinics contravening these regulations.

In effect, this means that previously popular terms such as ‘Wrinkle Reducing Injections’, ‘Anti Wrinkle Injections’, ‘Dermal Fillers’, ‘Lip Fillers’ etc. are not permitted on the reasoning that those terms would result in a reasonable consumer understanding that the terms promote the use or supply of a prescription medicine.

On its website, TGA currently states:

“Either directly or indirectly, you cannot make any reference in your advertisement for cosmetic injection services to prescription-only substances or to product trade names of such products. This includes acronyms, nicknames, abbreviations and hashtags, which may be taken by a consumer as a reference to a specific prescription-only medicine or substance.

This includes:

  • anti-wrinkle injections
  • dermal fillers
  • injectable products used for improvement of the appearance of submental fat.”

Accordingly, in compliance with TGA’s regulations, Sydney Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic regrets to advise that it can no longer provide information on its website regarding Anti Wrinkle Injections or Dermal Fillers, nor showcase its ‘before & after’ photographs of such treatments.

Henceforth, all detailed information on Anti Wrinkle Injections and Dermal Fillers will only be available at a consultation.

Reassuringly, our clinic will continue to provide its full range of non-surgical procedures under the highest of professional standards by ‘doctors only’ as it has always done over the last 30 years!

Our 'Total Facial Rejuvenation Consultations'

With the combined experience of our Cosmetic Doctors & Specialist Surgeons, Sydney Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic is able to offer the FULL spectrum of facial rejuvenation procedures, both surgical and non-surgical. Accordingly, we offer two types of ‘Total Facial Rejuvenation Consultations’:

  1. Total Facial Rejuvenation Consultation (Non-Surgical): An honest, comprehensive, and informative consultation with one of our highly experienced Cosmetic Doctors. Suited to those patients looking to improve the signs of facial ageing using only non-surgical treatments. After a detailed facial analysis, our doctor will explain all your treatment options including:
    • which non-surgical treatments would best correct your areas of concern.
    • the degree of correction expected.

Finally, our doctor will provide you with printed information on those treatment options to take home for your further consideration. This approach has always been our protocol and it has delivered high patient satisfaction rates over so many years.

2. Total Facial Rejuvenation Consultation (Surgical): This variety of consultation focusses on all surgical facial rejuvenation procedures such as face lift, neck lift, eyelid surgery, brow lift, and facial fat grafting. Naturally, this variety of consultation is most suited to those with more advanced signs of facial ageing and is conducted by one of our Specialist Surgeons.

Understandably, both consultation types can have overlaps: at a Non-Surgical Consultation, it may be determined that only a surgical procedure will correct your concerns. If this were the case, you would then be referred to our Facial Plastic Surgeon.

Conversely, if you are having a Surgical Consultation and our Specialist Surgeon believes that you would achieve an even better aesthetic result by adding non-surgical treatments after your surgery, he will recommend you then see our Cosmetic Doctor.

So, whatever your concerns, rest assured that we have the experience and expertise to help!

Our 30+ Years of Experience In Facial Rejuvenation Procedures

Sydney Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic is a leading ‘Doctor Only’ Clinic with all treatments being performed either by experienced Cosmetic Doctors or Specialist Surgeons. We do not have ‘Nurse Injectors’.

Our Clinic was the first in Australia to introduce the cosmetic use of muscle-relaxing wrinkle treatments way back in 1994 and therefore has the longest experience with it in Australia.

And we have an even longer history with Zyderm and Zyplast Fillers (no longer made) dating back to the 1980s. These consisted of bovine collagen extracted from calf skin and required a skin test on the forearm to check for possible allergy 4 weeks prior to any treatment.

Facial rejuvenation treatments have certainly have come a long way since then!

So, no matter what your treatment aims are, you can rest assured that you’re in the hands of an experienced and reputable Clinic!
